Potomac State hammers Hudson Valley; drops nightcap

Catamounts roll to 9-1 victory, then face perfection by Bowie State’s Hernandez in 8-0 loss

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Jessica Shirley tossed a three-hitter and slugged a home run to lead Potomac State to a 9-1 victory over Hudson Valley (N.Y.) in college softball action Wednesday afternoon.

The Catamounts lost their second game of the day to NCAA Division II Bowie State, 8-0, with pitcher Manda Hernandez firing a perfect game.

In the Catamounts’ win over Hudson Valley, Shirley scattered three hits, walked only one and struck out six.

Mandi Workman smacked a three-run double to highlight a six-run second inning for Potomac State. Shirley hit a solo homer in the fourth. The game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

In the second game, Hernandez retired all 15 Potomac State hitters she faced and had four strikeouts.

Lewis went 1-for-3 and hit a two-run single in Bowie State’s five-run first inning. Amanda Ray hit a solo homer later in the game for the Bulldogs.

Today, Potomac State (5-3) will play Grace (Ind.) College at 9 a.m. and Bowie State at 11. Hudson Valley is the only two-year school Potomac State is playing during their spring break stay at Myrtle Beach.
