Late home run sinks Potomac State Softball
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — With two outs and two strikes on her in the bottom of the seventh inning, Katie Clouse changed everything with one swing by hitting a three-run home run to send her team from a 8-7 deficit to a 10-8 win as Grace (Ind.) completed a sweep of Potomac State during the Catamounts’ final day of the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Jessica Anton had four runs batted in on two home runs to help the Lancers to a 13-5 victory in the first game and push Potomac State’s record to 6-6.
The Cats were ahead 2-0 after the top of the second inning in game two, but Grace scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Potomac State countered with three runs in the top of the third and added three more runs over the the sixth and seventh innings. Down 8-4 going into their final at bats, the Lancers scored three times to cut the lead to one and were down to their final strike when Clouse hit the walk-off shot.
PSC was led by Victoria Thompson and Jessica Shirley, with Thompson hitting a two-run home run and a single for three total RBIs and Shirley hitting a two-run homer. Mandy Workman added a double and a single.
Anton hit a three-run blast in the first inning of the opener that erased a 3-0 Catamount lead, and added a solo shot in the third inning. Clouse had two doubles.
Bethany Hansel hit a solo home run in the third inning for Potomac State, and Workman singled twice.
The Catamounts return home to play a doubleheader with Hagerstown on Thursday.
