Volleyball: Potomac State tops College of Southern Maryland
LAPLATA, MD — Potomac State’s Alyssa Whitacre, sidelined by an injury earlier in the day, came back with a huge performance to lead the Catamounts to a 3-2 win over Southern Maryland in the College of Southern Maryland Invitational on Saturday.
Whitacre had eight kills, 29 assists and 25 digs to lead the Catamounts, (6-1) to the win, their third in four matches at the tournament. The game scores were 23-25, 25-12, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-9.
Potomac State beat Lenoir (N.C.) 25-15, 25-9, 25-19 and Wake Tech (N.C.) 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-16 on Friday.
On Saturday, the Catamounts lost to Catawba (N.C.) 13-25, 11-25 and 15-25, then rebounded for the five set win over Southern Maryland.
For the weekend, Peyton Smith had 86 assists, 12 aces and 38 digs, Kaitlyn Semler 28 kills and 52 digs, Stephanie Cornachia 22 kills, six aces and eight blocks for Potomac State. Morgan Mongold added 31 kills and 48 digs, Whitacre finished with 65 digs and 32 assists, Julia Morikawa had 42 digs, Michaela Osbourne 22 kills and 10 blocks and Aimee Conley 16 kills.
