Potomac State’s Cornachia, Smith named all-tournament

HAGERSTOWN, MD — Potomac State’s Stephanie Cornachia and Peyton Smith were named to the all-tournament team after leading the Catamounts in the Region XX volleyball tournament last weekend.
Potomac State began the weekend by beating Essex 25-23, 25-10, then lost a tight battle with Northern Virginia, 25-22, 18-25 and 15-17.
In Sunday’s semifinal round, the Catamounts again played well but lost to Hagerstown 23-25, 18-25 and 22-25.
Smith, a sophomore from Falling Waters, W.Va., had 60 assists and 17 digs while Cornachia, a freshman from Ridgeley, W.Va., and former Frankfort High standout, had 18 kills, five blocks and nine digs in earning spots on the all-tournament team.
Morgan Mongold had 22 and 35 digs, Aimee Conley 20 kills nad 10 digs, Michaela Osbourne 10 kills, seven blocks and 25 digs, Kaitlyn Semler seven aces and 15 kills, Julia Morikawa four aces and 16 digs and Alyssia Whitacre six aces and 42 digs for Potomac State.
The Catamounts ended the season with a 22-19 record.
Hagerstown swept Northern Virginia in the finals, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-20 to win its 11th straight Region XX Tournament and will play in the national tournament at Owens Community College in Toledo Ohio Nov. 21-23.
