Volleyball: PSC edges Hagerstown for berth in Region XX Title Match

HAGERSTOWN, MD — Shakayla Ganoe had a triple-double, Shayla Hillian dominated at the net and Sarah Whiteman provided a big spark late in the match as Potomac State outlasted Hagerstown Community College in a five-set nail-biter on Saturday for a berth in today’s Region XX championship match.

Potomac State (19-4) will play Frederick (26-3) today at noon at Jim Brown Arena at Hagerstown Community College with the Region XX, Division II crown and a berth in the National Tournament on the line. The teams split their regular-season matches, Potomac State winning a fiveset match in Frederick and the Cougars sweeping the Catamounts in the rematch in Keyser.

Potomac State and Hagerstown split their first four sets in yesterday’s semifinal, the Cats taking an early lead with 25-19 and 25-22 wins, and the Hawks coming back with 25-20, 25-23 victories. Potomac State took the fifth, 15-11.

Ganoe had team highs with 19 points, 39 assists and 19 digs and also had three blocks and two aces, while Hillian had 16 kills, 13 digs and eight blocks, with four solo blocks and four block assists.

Sarah Lowery added nine kills, eight points and 16 digs, Kyle Stottlemyer had 13 points and11 kills, Autumn Dishman 17 digs, Anya Murray 11 kills and Whiteman 13 digs.

Whiteman’s defensive play helped swing the momentum back to Potomac State, which had trailed 18-8 in the fourth. Her play was critical, as was Murray’s, over the last two sets in helping fuel the comeback.

Hagerstown (14-13) beat Allegany (14-9) in the firstround morning match before losing to Potomac State. Frederick, No. 20 in the latest Division II national poll, beat Northern Virginia 19-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 in the other semifinal.

Today’s winner will advance to the national tournament, scheduled Nov. 19-21, at Phoenix College, Ariz.
