Volleyball: Potomac State drops pair in NC

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Potomac State turned in a pair of strong performances over the weekend, especially defensively, but dropped matches to Cape Fear Community College and Spartanburg Methodist in college volleyball.

The Catamounts lost to host Cape Fear 25-23, 25-13 and 25-20, and lost to Spartanburg in four tight sets. The Cats won the first one 26-24, before falling in the next three 25-19, 25-22 and 26-24.

For the day, Ericka Gordon had a team-high 17 kills, 33 digs and three block assists and Shayla Hillian added 16 kills, six digs, five solo blocks, four block assists and four service aces for Potomac State (17-6).

“We played well, and excellent defense. Skylar Barbe’s defense kept us in a lot of points,’’ said PSC coach Martha Ganoe. “Our blocking helped us a lot, too, with Sarah Lowery and Brittany Hozdik, Shayla Hillian and Anya Murray doing a very good job.”

Hozdik finshed with 15 kills and nine blocks, Lowery had 13 kills, nine digs and seven block assists, and Murray added nine kills, seven digs and two block assists. Bailey Godlove had 55 assists and 17 digs, Makaleigh Roberts 37 digs and Skylar Barbe 36 digs.

The Catamounts host Cecil on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Garrett on Friday at 7 p.m., needing wins in both matches to finish unbeaten against Region XX foes.
