Volleyball: Owens sweeps PSC at NJCAA Division II tournament

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Tyanna Smith had eight kills and three blocks, Devon Heitkamp added seven kills and Christine Tylutki had six to send second- seeded Owens Community College to a 25-18, 25-9, 25-18 win over 15th-seeded Potomac State in the first round of the NJCAA Division II National Volleyball Tournament.

The 16-team double-elimination tournament began Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center. Owens, 40-4 after a 25-15, 25-22, 25-20 sweep of No. 10 Sauk Valley later in the day, will play third-seeded Lincoln Land, Illinois in a semifinal today at 6:30 p.m.

Owens was ranked No. 2 in the final Division II regular- season poll of the year.

Potomac State, the Region XX champion, is 20-7 and will play seventh- seeded Johnson County, Kansas today in a consolation bracket quarterfinal at 10 a.m.

Johnson County, No. 13 in the final national poll of the regular season, lost to Sauk Valley 24-26, 25-16, 19-25, 21-25 in the first round Thursday and has a 21-16 record.
