Upward Bound
What is Upward Bound?
Upward Bound is a college preparatory program designed to provide high school students with the academic skills and motivation that will help them graduate from high school and succeed in college. Upward Bound Programs are funded by TRiO grants from the U.S. Department of Education. All program services and activities are FREE to participants. The program operates all year, with programming during the school term and a summer component.
From October through May, students who participate in the program travel to the Potomac State College campus on alternate Saturdays to participate in math, science, and English classes; tutoring; educational counseling; workshops; and guidance sessions. There is also a college visitation and cultural event trip each spring.
The six-week summer component allows participants to experience college firsthand as they live in the Potomac State College residence halls, dine on campus at the Potomac Cafe, and learn in college labs and classrooms. Field trips, service projects, and recreational activities are scheduled every week. Students go home on the weekends. Seniors who have graduated from high school can take two college classes (at no cost) by participating in the Bridge Program.
