Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital has named Potomac State College alumnus, Michael Gustafson, MD, MBA, as president, effective immediately.

Dr. Gustafson has been serving as the Chief Operating Officer of Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital since 2011.  In naming Dr. Gustafson to this leadership role, Dr. Betsy Nabel, President of Brigham and Women’s Health Care, stated that, “The relationship between Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is thriving in large part because of the superb leadership and unwavering dedication of Michael Gustafson.”

Since Dr. Gustafson joined BWFH as chief operating officer in 2011, the institution has undergone a remarkable transformation of key clinical programs, with tremendous growth in inpatient and outpatient volumes and improved financial stability.   Dr. Gustafson has also demonstrated an intense commitment and passion for improving staff engagement, the environment of care, patient safety and quality outcomes, and the overall experience for patients and families.  With these enhancements and an acceleration of clinical and administrative integration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital has been able to offer an impressive array of new and expanded programs for the community.

Prior to joining BWFH in 2011, Dr. Gustafson served in senior leadership roles at BWH for over a decade, including senior vice president for clinical excellence.  Dr. Gustafson received his medical degree at West Virginia University and completed his General Surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He later went on to become one of the first surgeons to ever receive an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has received numerous national awards and honors reflecting his leadership in hospital safety, quality and performance measurement.

Dr. Gustafson is a native of Keyser, W.Va., graduating from Potomac State in 1983, where he received the Outstanding Student Award. The College honored him with the Alumni Achievement Award in 2004 and in 2011 his name was engraved on the Duke Anthony Whitmore and Henry Louis Gates Jr. Academic Achievement Wall.
