Library Bibliographic Instruction Services

Bibliographic Instruction Services

  • Giving tours of the Library to classes or community groups.
  • Providing library orientation sessions at the request of the instructor to English 2, orientation, or any class requiring library research.
  • Leading workshops/tutorials on the Internet, e-mail, search engines, and electronic resources for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Teaching the Library Science 1 class.
  • Developing library handouts for patron use.

Tours

Library tours typically include a walkthrough of the Library and a description of the various services and tools available to the patron. Participants receive a Library Handbook and any other appropriate library handout. Tours may also be combined with library orientation sessions if the instructor desires, and if there is sufficient time for preparation, post-tour library activities may be added.

Community groups are welcome to tour the Library and use its resources. Some of the groups that the Library has hosted in the past are the Cub Scouts and classes from the Keyser Primary-Middle School, the Elk Garden Elementary School, and the Mineral County Vocational Technical Center.

The following conditions apply to library tours:

  1. Tours must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. The Library may refuse to schedule a tour if the tour would interfere with other library activities or if the tour would unduly disturb students during periods of heavy use, such as the two weeks before midterm exams and the two weeks before finals.
  2. The instructor/group leader must accompany the class/group.
  3. Research has shown that library tours/orientation sessions have little effect unless they are tied into some goal or current project. The instructor/group leader should provide a theme or goal for the tour.

Library Orientation Sessions

Library orientation sessions typically include a lecture or PowerPoint presentation on various electronic resources followed by a demonstration. Students receive a Library Handbook and any other appropriate library handout. Library orientation sessions may be combined with library tours if the instructors desire, and if there is sufficient time for preparation, post-orientation library activities may be added.

Currently, the Library offers the following* PowerPoint presentations.
Electronic Resources
E-mail
Internet
WWW Search Engines
*Other presentations may be developed upon request, but at least two-weeks notice is required.

The following conditions apply to library orientation sessions:

  1. Orientation sessions must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
    • The Library may refuse to schedule a session if the session would interfere with other library activities. However, there is the possibility that the session can be given in the instructor's classroom or in one of the instructional technology classrooms in Academy Hall.
    • The Viewing Room is going to be converted into the College's new Distance Education Classroom. Please keep this in mind when planning for the Spring 1998 semester.
  2. The instructor must accompany the class.
  3. Research has shown that orientation sessions have little effect unless they are tied into some goal or current project. The instructor should provide a complete explanation of the assignment that prompted the sessions so that real examples can be used in the actual demonstration.

Workshops/Training Sessions

Library workshops are usually held on Friday afternoons from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. They consist of a one-hour presentation and demonstration followed by a one-hour online activity session. The size of the workshop can range from 6 to 10 people. Participants will receive a certificate after they attend the workshop.

Faculty and staff workshops were held in the fall of 1996 and the spring of 1997. A student e-mail workshop was held in the fall of 1997.
