Upward Bound Announces Summer 2011 Distinguished Students

The Upward Bound program at Potomac State College of West Virginia University recently held an awards dinner for summer participants and their families.  

Accomplishments of outstanding students were recognized at this time. Ben Martin of Moorefield High School received the evening’s most distinguished award for Overall Outstanding Student of the Summer Component, as well as the Most Outstanding Spanish Student Award; Nickolas Cummings of Keyser High School was the recipient of the Spirit of Upward Bound Award; Victoria Edwards of Hampshire High School was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Science Student Award; Ashley Day of Hampshire High School was the recipient of the Residence Life Community Member Award; Amber White of Hampshire High School was the recipient of the Most Improved Student Award; Destiny Smith of Petersburg High School was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Math Student Award; Shawn Luther of Keyser High School was the recipient of the Residence Life Community Member Award; Cheyanne Conrath of Union Educational Complex was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Student in Literature Award; and Carrieann Stewart of Keyser High School was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Student in Composition Award.  

Upward Bound is a year-round, college preparatory program funded through TRiO grants by the U.S. Department of Education. The program held at Potomac State serves students in grades 9-12 from target high schools in Mineral, Hampshire, Grant and Hardy Counties of West Virginia.  

Through the school year component and residential six-week summer component, Upward Bound provides academic classes and tutoring; educational counseling; college tours; and cultural and educational enrichment.
