Michael Gustafson, M.D., to be Added to Scholars' Wall

Michael GustafsonPotomac State will recognize Michael Gustafson, MD during a special ceremony on Sunday, April 17, with the inscription of his name on the Duke Anthony Whitmore/Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Academic Achievement Wall. Dr. Gustafson is currently the Senior Vice President for Clinical Excellence at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. He also serves as an instructor in the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. 

Dr. Gustafson attended Potomac State from 1981 to 1983, where he was recognized as the Outstanding Graduating Student. He completed his bachelor's degree and medical degree at West Virginia University, his general surgery residency at Brigham & Women's Hospital and a three-year surgical research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also one of the first surgeons to ever receive a MBA degree from Harvard business school, where he graduated with honors in 1999. 

In addition to speaking at regional and national meetings and conferences, Dr. Gustafson has been published in national journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Endocrinology, Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Joint Commission Journal on Quality Improvement, and Science to name a few. His current areas of research and expertise include patient safety, surgical care improvement, performance measurement, quality reporting, and healthcare strategy. He was also recognized at the College with the Alumni Achievement Award in 2004.
