Winners of Wild Turkey Calling Contest Announced

The Potomac State College (PSC) of West Virginia University Outdoor Adventure Club hosted its first annual Wild Turkey Calling Contest on April 9 in the Davis Conference Center. A total of six callers took the stage to strut their stuff for the judges.

Awards were given for highest scoring student and the highest scoring community competitors. Additionally, following a head-to-head call-off, an overall champion was named. The overall champion was Galen “T-Berry” Ours, of Petersburg, W.Va. Finishing second overall and high scoring college student was Matt Mongold, an engineering major at the College from Dorcas, W.Va.

Competitors were evaluated on their presentation of four calls or components of the wild turkey vocabulary. The first three being the plain yelp of the hen, the cluck and purr, and the assembly yelp of the adult hen; callers were allowed to choose the fourth call.

The following individuals served as judges for the event: Patrick McCurdy of Marlinton, W.Va., a PSC alumnus and regional biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation; Jeremy Leatherman of New Creek, W.Va., a PSC alumnus; Jon Harper of Petersburg, W.Va., a PSC alumnus employed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Donnie Rexrode of Maysville, W.Va.; and Lee Haggerty, of Moorefield, W.Va., a PSC alumnus employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
