Potomac State College to hold FAFSA workshop

To receive student financial aid for college, a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed every school year. The quickest way to complete and submit the FAFSA is electronically through the official FAFSA Web site.

Potomac State College of West Virginia University will once again be offering a free FAFSA workshop. The workshop will be held in Academy Hall on Sunday, February 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. Computers will be available and financial aid staff will be present to assist families of new or current students. The priority deadline for completion of the FAFSA is March 1, 2012.

Preferably those wanting to complete the FAFSA that day should have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) both for the student and for at least one parent so that the FAFSA can be signed electronically when submitted. PIN numbers are available at www.pin.ed.gov.

The worksheets for the 2012-2013 FAFSA can be downloaded and printed from the www.fafsa.ed.gov Web site or may be picked up at the Enrollment Services Office at 75 Arnold Street on the College campus.

Since the worksheet follows the format of the on-line FAFSA, it is helpful to obtain the worksheet ahead of time and fill in as much of the information as possible. The financial aid staff will then be available at the workshop to answer any questions and help the participants complete the FAFSA on-line and submit it.

Participants will need the following information to complete the worksheet and/or the 2012-2013 FAFSA:

  • Social Security number for the student and the student’s parents if required to provide parental information.
  • Driver’s license if the student has one.
  • Federal income tax information or tax returns for 2011, including IRS W-2 forms for the student and spouse if the student is married or for the student’s parents if required to provide parental information. If the 2011 federal tax information is not yet available, the student can still complete the FAFSA, indicating a ‘will-file’ status by estimating their 2011 financial information, and then providing the correct information when the 2011 federal tax returns are completed.
  • Information on savings, investments, businesses, and farm assets for the student and parents, if required to provide parental information.
