Potomac State Men's and Women's Soccer celebrate stellar seasons

PSC Soccer

This fall the Potomac State Men's and Women's Soccer teams both dominated in almost every game they played. That domination was good enough for both teams to finish as the Region XX runners-up. Both teams advanced to the Region XX Championship game and came up just short.

The Potomac State Men suffered some tough breaks in the second half of the Region XX Championship game, missing out on two possible goals that would have changed the outcome of its 1-0 loss to Montgomery-Rockville.

The men's season ended at 15-3 with two of those losses coming to Rockville over the last week of the season. The Catamounts entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and beat fourth-seeded Anne Arundel to advance to the finals. No. 3 Rockville beat No. 2 Howard in their semifinal match.

“I thought we dominated the last 10 minutes, but my hat’s off to them. They played a great game and made the play they needed to," said Potomac State Men's Coach Ray Kiddy.

Three Catamounts were named to the Region XX All-Tournament team. Steven Holtschneider was honored as was Justin Winebrenner. Fungaroli, also earned an All-Tourney nod.

The PSC women went through the regular season with a perfect 12-0 mark and dropped their only game of the season to Anne Arundel in the Region XX, Division III championship game 3-1

In the semi-final game Cassie Alamo’s first half goal led them past Montgomery-Rockville 1-0.

The Lady Cats finished the season ranked 10th in the NJCAA.

“It was a disappointing loss, especially for our sophomores, but it was a great season,’’ said Potomac State Women's Coach Mark Sprouse. “We had a wonderful group of young women on our team.”

Defenders Rebekah Messenger and Ashley Thomas and midfielder Cassie Alamo were named to the all-tournament team from Potomac State.
