Catamounts run ends in 3-1 loss in Region XX Final

ARNOLD, MD — Anne Arundel grabbed a two-goal lead in the first half, and traded goals with Potomac State in the second to defeat the Catamounts 3-1 for the Region XX, Division III championship Saturday at Anne Arundel Community College.

Meghenn Jackson and Catherine Cox scored unassisted goals in a four-minute span midway through the first half, giving the Pioneers (11-4) a 2-0 halftime lead.

Potomac State’s Laurel Podlesnik cut the score to 2-1 with an unassisted goal at the 66:23 mark, but Anne Arundel answered in the 69th minute when Nichole Forrester converted a penalty kick.

The teams did not play during the regular season, and the loss was the first for the Catamounts, who finished 13-1.

“It was a disappointing loss, especially for our sophomores, but it was a great season,’’ said Potomac State coach Mark Sprouse. “We had a wonderful group of young women on our team.”

"We lost our intensity for about a twenty minute period in the first half and that's when they put in two goals. The rest of the game was even. It's the only blemish on a fantastic season."

Potomac State held the edge in shots, 10-9, and corner kicks, 5-2. Acasha Smith had four saves and Brittany Yates two in goal for the Catamounts. Chelsea Clark-Ames had nine for the Pioneers.

Defenders Rebekah Messenger and Ashley Thomas and midfielder Cassie Alamo were named to the all-tournament team from Potomac State.

Anne Arundel will play in the Division III National Tournament Nov. 8-11 at Tompkins Cortland (N.Y.) Community College.
