Poetry Slam! to celebrate the poetic word
Why should you Slam with us? Because as written by Afzal Ahmed Syed, “If my voice is not reaching you, add to it the echo—”
Potomac State College (PSC) of West Virginia University in association with Frostburg State University (FSU) will hold an Intercollegiate Poetry Slam on Wednesday, April 24th at Dante’s, located at 14 W. Main Street in Frostburg, Md. Registration begins at 7 p.m. with the slam beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded. The $2 cover charge will help with the prizes.
Poetry began as an oral tradition, and slam poetry, a blend of literature and performance that culminates in live competitions, is one of the most vital and energetic movements in poetry since the 1990s. Perhaps an original written by you could become the next poem to be recognized worldwide, and the upcoming ‘Poetry Slam’ is just the place to be heard!
The following rules apply: 1) Readers must be over 18 years old to participate. 2) Each poem must be the writer’s own work. 3) Each writer gets five minutes to read one poem. 4) Points will be deducted if reader goes over time frame. 5) Props, costumes or musical instruments may not be used.
Poems must be read on-stage and will be judged on their literary merit and the quality of the writing; however, a good performance may also capture a judge’s attention. The high and low scores of each of the five judges will be dropped with the three middle scores being added together for the final score.
According to the Poets.org web site, “Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.”
The Poetry Slam is sponsored by the FSU Center for Creative Writing and the PSC Black Student Alliance.
