Potomac State to offer two ‘Ham Radio’ classes
Potomac State College of West Virginia University will again be offering various special interest courses for Fall 2013. Two never-before-offered classes include; Welcome to Ham Radio (for amateurs) and Let’s Take it up a Notch (for those who already have a license).
Amateur Radio 101 will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Academy Hall, Room 304 beginning September 3 through October 29. This course is an introduction to the fun and adventurous world of amateur (ham) radio and is for people who have no prior knowledge of ham radio.
Instructor Dick, Payne will teach the basics of using a communications system, proper operating procedures, basic electronics, and how to operate your radio safely. Individuals will learn about resources like repeater stations, radio clubs and ham public service groups that are available to licensed hams in the local area.
Participants will need to purchase the ARRL Technician Class License Manual, which can be purchased on-line at: http://www.arrl.org/shop/Ham-Radio-License-Manual-Revised-2nd-Edition/ . A testing session to obtain the FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class License will be provided at the end of the course.
Amateur Radio Upgrade: Let’s Take It Up A Notchwill meet on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Academy Hall, Room 304 beginning September 5 through October 24. This course is for amateur radio operators who already have a Technician, General or Advanced Class License and wish to upgrade to a higher class.
PSC Instructor Jill Schaumloeffel will build upon your amateur radio knowledge and experience to prepare for the General and/or Extra Class license exams. Participants will need to purchase the ARRL General or Extra Class License Manual(s), which can be purchased on-line at: http://www.arrl.org/shop/ARRL-General-Class-License-Manual-7th-Edition/ and at http://www.arrl.org/shop/ARRL-Extra-Class-License-Manual-10th-Edition/ . A testing session to upgrade your FCC Amateur Radio License will be provided at the end of the course.
