The Potomac State College (PSC) of West Virginia University’s Men’s Soccer Team just completed one of their most successful seasons with a 15-2-2 record.
The Catamounts finished second in Region XX play with only one loss to the No. 2 team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III National Poll. The Catamounts lost to Montgomery College in regular season and in the Region XX Final. This is the second consecutive year that the Potomac State Men’s Soccer Team was in the Region XX Final. Six players on the team received honors within the region.
Connor Eberly, a general studies major, was named to the Region XX All-Tournament Team and to the Second Team All-Region. Eberly recorded nine shutouts in 19 games for the Catamounts. He served as one of the four team captains and was listed in the ‘Top 20 Goalkeepers’ in four different goalkeeping areas in the country. A Mountain Ridge graduate and two-time state champion in high school, Eberly was named Goalkeeper of the Year in 2011. Eberly led the Potomac State team to an overall record of 30-5-2 in two years.
Chris Ranker was named to the Region XX Second Team All-Region XX. Ranker is second in scoring with 12 goals and 6 assists. This was the second consecutive year that he has scored 12 goals for the Catamounts. Ranker was a Mountain Ridge graduate, two-time state champion, and the Cumberland-Times News Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011. He is majoring in elementary education.
Brandon Cutter was named to the Region XX Second Team All-Region XX. He led the Catamount defense, allowing only 20 goals on the season. Cutter played all four back positions on the team. “Brandon was our best defender all season, and at times, the best offensive player we had” said Coach Ray Kiddy. He only has one speed – fast and aggressive. His transition from defensive to offense was smooth and alert. You have a chance of never losing a game with Brandon in the back.” Cutter led his Mountain Ridge High School to a state championship in 2011 and was name Defensive Player of the Year for that effort. He’s majoring in social work.
Caleb Goodin was named to the 2013 Region XX All-Tournament Team. Goodin spearheaded the Catamount’s defense this past season that allowed only 20 goals. He was excellent on defense throughout the Region XX Tournament. “Caleb did it all for us this year, including scoring a goal against Montgomery College in the Region XX Tournament,” said Coach Kiddy. Goodin is a 2012 Bedford High School graduate where he was an All-District VI Soccer All-Star and received the Leadership Award in soccer. He is a forestry major.
Two freshmen were also named to the All-Region XX Team. Brandon Lee, a civil engineering major from Bisbane, Australia, was name to the All-Region XX First Team and also to the Region XX All-Region Tournament Team. Lee finished third in the NJCAA Division III Scoring race with 25 goals and six assists. “Brandon was a great asset to our offense this season” said Coach Kiddy
Jerad Fike, a mechanical engineering major from Accident, Md., was named the All-Region XX Second Team All-Star as midfield player. Fike finished the season with three goals and one assist. He’s most known for hardnosed defense. “We played Jared as more of a defensive midfield player and he did an excellent job for us,” said Coach Kiddy.
“Potomac State has sixteen freshmen returning next season and we’re excited about Brandon and Jared leading our 2014 squad,” he added.
