“Harnessing the Power of Social Media” Workshop to be Offered at Potomac State College

“Harnessing the Power of Social Media,” a one-time workshop will be offered at Potomac State College of West Virginia University, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the Davis Conference Center by Presenter Mindie Burgoyne.  This workshop will offer an overview of the Big 5 Platforms – Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and Blogging, and a strategy for using those platforms to increase business revenues. This opportunity is open to the public. The cost is $55, per person.

Burgoyne is employed by the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development as an economic development field representative. Her responsibilities include helping businesses and local governments in Maryland’s rural Eastern region. Through her job, she learned of the many treasures Maryland has in its small, rural towns which motivated her to author a number of books about these areas.

Burgoyne started building social media networks through Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn in February 2009. Within one month she had received offers to write for four magazines and one book publisher. She accepted the book offer and wrote Haunted Eastern Shore: Ghostly Tales from East of the Chesapeake for History Press. As she built her social network, she was able to accelerate the word of mouth promotion for her book.

On Sept. 3, 2009, one month before the book was to launch, Burgoyne began a Facebook Fan page for the book and by launch date Oct. 1, 2009, had acquired 1,000 fans. That number rose to 2,000 fans by Nov. 1, 2009, and by Nov. 13, six weeks after the launch, the book sold out its first printing and went into its second printing.

This workshop is part of The Regional Leadership Series V developed by The Greater Cumberland Committee (TGCC) in cooperation with Allegany College of Maryland, Frostburg State University, Garrett College, and Potomac State College of West Virginia University.

This workshop also compliments existing leadership programs including: Leadership Allegany!, The Western Maryland Rural Leadership Academy, Leadership MD, and Leadership WV.
