Men’s Basketball: Banks leads PSC over Carl Sandburg

DANVILLE, Ill. — Marcus Banks scored a game-high 33 points and Potomac State outscored Carl Sandburg by 15 points during the second half to pick up an 83-70 victory Wednesday at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament at Danville Area Community College.

Banks hit on 11 of 17 field goals, including 7 of 10 outside of the three-point line, and was 4 for 5 at the foul line. Reggie Baker added 20 points and Derylton Hill scored another 13. Hill led the team with 11 rebounds.

The Chargers, from Illinois, got out to a 38-36 lead by halftime after shooting 56 percent from the floor, and 54.5 percent from three-point range in the first 20 minutes. They turned around to shoot 37.9 percent (11 for 29) to allow the Catamounts to catch up.

Potomac State (21-9) shot 57.1 percent during the second half by making 16 of 28. They were also aided by a 13 of 14 showing at the foul line, and dominated in points from the bench by outscoring the Chargers 42-28 in that category.

Aaron Powers led Carl Sandburg with 20 points and Juwan Hubbard added 19. Vince Gooden scored 13 points and Hubbard led the team with seven rebounds.

The Catamounts, which lost 93-88 to Wake Tech in overtime on Tuesday, will play Friday at noon against the winner of today’s match-up between St. Louis CC and Dean College.
