Leah Hershberger Named “E. William Noland Outstanding Student”

Leah Hershberger, a sophomore from Martinsburg, Pa., has been named the “E. William Noland Outstanding Student” for 2015 at Potomac State College and will deliver the graduation message to her fellow students as well as introduce the keynote speaker during commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 9. Hershberger was also recognized as a Whitmore/Gates Scholar with the inscription of her name on the Duke Anthony Whitmore/Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Academic Achievement Wall during the recent Weekend of Honors events.
Hershberger, a resource management major, has been named to the President’s Lists for all semesters in which she has attended Potomac State. She received a Potomac State Women’s Basketball Scholarship and serves as captain of the team, playing in the guard position. She was awarded the PSC Blue and Gold Level 1 Academic Scholarship, the Dr. Roy D. Hoffman Scholarship and the Glenn Beach Memorial Scholarship.
Hershberger serves as the student representative for the PSC Social Justice Committee, is an Academic Success Honoree and was a finalist for Homecoming Queen here at the College. Additionally, she is a member of the PSC Collegiate 4-H Club and the Ag and Forestry Club.
Volunteer work includes helping out with the Day of Caring and Sharing, the ‘Soles for Souls’ Campaign and organizing the West Virginia State FFA Livestock Quiz Bowl.
She received outstanding honors with her local 4-H chapter and has served in leadership positions of secretary, treasurer and reporter. She also earned second-place honors at the All-American Dairy Judging Forum and at the Penn State Spring Judging Contest (twice), and third-place honors at the PA State Farm Show PDCA Dairy Judging.
Having grown up on Elda-Chross Farms, Hershberger has viable first-hand experience with the management, production, accounting, and other recordkeeping practices needed to run this type of business and has competed in various cattle shows for several years.
Hershberger is an active member of Hopewell Grace Brethren Church, was named the 2013 Bedford County Dairy Princess and served as a Pennsylvania State Pageant finalist.
Hershberger states that a favorite quote by famed Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi encompasses her mindset, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”
