PSC Receives Military Friendly Schools Designation for 3rd Consecutive Year
Potomac State College (PSC) of West Virginia University is pleased to announce that it has been named to the 2016 Military Friendly Schools list for a third consecutive year by Victory Media, a media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.
This national designation allows Potomac State College to continue using the Military Friendly Schools logo on its website, in the College’s recruitment materials and in its advertising.
In recent years, the College has introduced a number of veteran-specific initiatives including: providing a veterans advocate in Enrollment Services; recognizing graduating veterans with red, white and blue cords during commencement; designating campus parking spaces for military service members and veterans only; establishing a student veterans organization; and establishing a veterans lounge on campus for military service and veteran students to congregate and study in between classes. Last year the College also established a versatile two-year, Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Technical Studies: General that accepts credit for military training. And new this year – the College is giving priority preregistration for students receiving veterans benefits as well as the College’s commitment to the 5-Star Challenge, a call to action for West Virginia’s two- and four-year institutions to adopt a set of exemplary standards for supporting student veterans.
“We’re committed to providing a supportive environment for our military students by continuing to enhance specific military friendly amenities at our College” said PSC President Leonard Colelli. “Our student veterans have informed us of their needs and we have responded in kind. We recognize the dedicated service and sacrifices our student veterans have made for our country and want to do all we can to assist them in the achievement of their academic and career goals.”
Institutions competed for the elite Military Friendly® School title by completing a survey of more than 100 questions covering ten categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Survey responses were scored against benchmarks across these key indicators of success. In addition, data was independently tested by EY (Ernst & Young) based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media with guidance from an independent advisory board of higher education and recruiting professionals.
