Potomac State Professor Cassandra Pritts Honored for Commitment to Accessibility
Potomac State History Professor Cassandra Pritts has been selected to receive West Virginia University’s (WVU) first Commitment to Communication Access Award, sponsored by the Office of Accessibility Services and the Transcriber & Interpreter Program. This new award recognizes a faculty member, staff member or graduate assistant from the WVU community who shows outstanding dedication to equality and who proactively works to make the University environment accessible to WVU students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Professor Pritts was previously named Outstanding Professor of the Year for 2014-2015 at Potomac State College (PSC), where she teaches courses in U.S. history, western civilization, and world history. Pritts also serves as Parliamentarian of PSC’s Faculty Assembly and is the college’s institutional representative for the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies. She is a trustee for the Mineral County Historical Society of West Virginia and caretaker of its historic Barrick Cemetery, and also serves as secretary for the Westernport Heritage Society of Maryland.
“It’s sometimes easy to overlook those people who are quietly doing the right thing in their classrooms and their communities. We wanted to change that,” said Coordinator of Auxiliary Aids, Jason Kapcala. “Professor Pritt’s commitment to classroom accessibility, and her ongoing effort to ensure that all students receive the same quality of education, serves as an excellent model for everyone who works in higher education.”
Professor Pritts will be honored with the award during the annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion meeting this summer.
The Commitment to Communication Access Award is the only award offered by the Transcriber & Interpreter Program, with nominations coming from both students and service providers in the WVU community.
