West Virginia University Potomac State College’s new K-9 Officer Kato was the celebrity of the hour during a recent reception held at the College for donors who helped fund this new addition to the campus police force. Kato is a two-and-a-half-year-old, purebred German shepherd trained to detect drugs and to conduct article searches.

Kato replaces Aria, who passed away in 2017. She was handled by Potomac State Campus Police Sgt. Mike Cannon, who now serves as handler to Kato. In addition to the College, Kato will work in conjunction with the Keyser Police Department when a K-9 officer is needed within the city limits.

“The College is grateful for the show of support from the community. This was a team effort that will benefit us all,” said Lucas Taylor, development director for Potomac State College.

Donating to fund Kato were: Friends of Jennings Randolph Lake; City of Keyser; Mark Santos; Debbie and Steve Kinnie; K&M Sales; Fox’s Pizza Den Keyser; PSC Faculty Adjunct Terry Falkowski; Patricia Harman; PSC Faculty Emeriti Kenneth Haines; Hayward Wilson; Keyser Moose Lodge #662; Naomi Snider; FNB Bank; Raymond Burner; Health Matters Urgent Care; William Ludwick, DDS.; Mountainview Veterinary Services; Keyser Orioles Club; and Keyser VFW.
