West Virginia University Potomac State College recently honored many of their students, faculty and staff with awards and recognition during its annual Weekend of Honors ceremonies. The Keyser Rotary Club’s “Service Above Self”Award was presented to Bethany Roberts, a criminal justice major from Lonaconing, Md.

Roberts attended the West Virginia Criminal Justice Educators Association Conference, where she participated on the state champion quiz-bowl team and served as a mentor to other students by helping with quiz practices and study sessions in preparation for the competition.

Roberts is also a member of the Criminal Justice Club, volunteering her time during ‘Discover Potomac State Days’ to give fingerprinting demonstrations, self-defense tactics, and offering insight into the Criminal Justice program to potential students.  Additionally, she has conducted fundraising for the club so members could participate in educational field trips and team-building exercises.

As a member of the PSC Campus Community Involvement Club, Roberts helped make and distribute crafts to the elderly living at Piney Valley in Keyser, W.Va.; volunteered to help paint Sunday school rooms at Grace United Methodist Church; and assisted with making apple butter during the Burlington Apple Harvest Festival.

Furthermore, she has volunteered to act as a crime victim or perpetrator during a training session with the Keyser Police Department and Mineral County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Rotary guidelines, the recipient of this award must demonstrate exemplary humanitarian service with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others.
