- Do not make a decision when you are feeling distressed.
- Know when the decision needs to be made.
- Identify what information is needed for a reasoned decision.
- Identify potential sources of needed information.
- Gather needed information.
- Talk to others about your pending decision. Remember the choice is yours alone.
- Write down the information you gather.
- List your options and alternatives.
- List pros and cons for each option.
- Clarify your values, interests, needs, goals, and desires.
- Weigh pros and cons for each option.
- Recognize there is seldom only a single "right" answer.
- Select your choice and relax.
- Give yourself permission to make mistakes. Learn from the process.
