Welcome to the Web site of the Psychological Counseling Services Office at Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
Location: Base floor of the Health Center
Office hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Telephone number: (304) 788-6976.
Staff: Susan Kephart, a licensed psychologist, provides on-going direction for this office. Occasionally, master and doctorial interns work under her supervision.
In a psychological emergency, crisis consultation is available by contacting campus police at (304) 788-6931 or by contacting a residential director. They will answer your call and immediately contact a staff member of the Psychological Counseling Services Office.
All of our services and programs are designed to contribute to your emotional well-being, in order to help you succeed in school and guide you toward a more fulfilling life.
Please note, this service is not meant to replace a face-to-face consultation with a trained counselor, nor does this service provide "on-line" counseling. Counseling is a collaborative process that involves the development of a unique, confidential, helping relationship. The counselor acts as a facilitator to help clients better understand themselves and the world around them. Open and honest discussion of feelings, behaviors, relationships, life experiences, and circumstances with a trained counselor in a safe, confidential environment enables individuals to grow towards greater freedom in making healthy choices and taking appropriate actions for more satisfying relationships, self-concept, academic progress, and life goals.
If you have problems, need information, or are having difficulty with a decision, professional counselors are there for you. We will listen, care, encourage, and empower you to make decisions that are right for you. Sessions generally last 50 minutes, one time per week. If needed, a referral to a private therapist or community service will be made. Typical questions and concerns may include:
