Upward Bound

Upward Bound students participated in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters' Bowl for Kids' Sake Bowl-A-Thon at Rainbow Lanes on 15 March. The students raised over $250 for this great cause.

Upward Bound is a federally-funded program designed to provide students with the academic skills and motivation that will help them to graduate from high school and succeed in college.  The program operates all year, during the school year and the summer.

The Upward Bound Program at Potomac State College is solely funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The total amount of Federal funding received for each program year is $274,014.  The program is funded to serve 60 students during each academic component and 40 students during each summer component.

From October through May, students who participate in the program travel to the Potomac State College campus to receive classes in math, science, and English; tutoring; and educational counseling, workshops, and guidance sessions.  There is also a college visitation and cultural event trip in the spring.

The six-week summer component allows participants to experience college first hand as they live in the Potomac State College residence halls, eat in the Potomac Cafe, and learn in college labs and classrooms.  Field trips, service projects, and recreational activities are scheduled every week.  Students go home on the weekends.  Seniors who have graduated from high school can take two college classes (at no cost) while participating in the Bridge Program.

To be eligible to apply for Upward Bound, a student must be enrolled in grades 9-10 at Frankfort, Hampshire, Keyser, Moorefield, Petersburg, or Union High Schools.  Priority enrollment is given to 9th grade students. A student interested in applying should come from a family in which neither parent has earned a four-year degree or one that meets certain financial requirements.  A student must also have academic need for the program's services.

Services and activities provided by the program include

  • Academic classes in math, science, literature, composition, and Spanish
  • Tutoring
  • College planning and college visits
  • Study, test taking, and financial aid assistance
  • Academic, career and personal counseling
  • Cultural activities
  • Recreational activities

To obtain an application, contact your school's guidance counselor, download a copy from this website or contact Upward Bound; we'll be happy to answer any questions and send an application to your home:

Weather Cancellation:  We will determine whether or not to cancel an Upward Bound Saturday meeting by the Friday afternoon prior to a scheduled meeting.  If you think that an Upward Bound meeting may be cancelled due to inclement weather, please call Jen's voice mail (304-788-6928), where a message will be left as soon as the decision to cancel has been made. If the schools are closed because of inclement weather on the Friday before a Saturday meeting, please call to check the voice mail message--it is very likely that Upward Bound will not be held on Saturday.
