WVU Potomac State College Alumni Newsletter | Fall 2025
PSC Campus President Greeting!
Dear Alumni & Friends,
The leaves are changing and the views from campus are phenomenal! Many great things
have happened since my last message and I’m eager to share some new initiatives.
As we transition to fall, feel free to keep up with the latest updates from the
college on social media.
The fall semester is here and with that comes lots of excitement on campus. Students
are engaged in and outside the classroom, athletic events are well underway, and
the Alumni Association just wrapped up the 50th Annual Homecoming Celebration!
When the WVU PSC Alumni Association Board has been diligently working in partnership
with WVU Potomac State College to implement the WVU PSC Alumni-Student Mentorship
Program. The program is designed to help students gain expertise while building
their professional networks. The students have been teamed up with alumni mentors,
who share their knowledge and experience in areas such as career goals, networking,
educational planning, confidence and morale building, and study and time management.
WVU Potomac State College is proud to announce Isaiah Garcia, a freshman from Martinsburg,
West Virginia majoring in Business Administration, as the September recipient
of the Catamounts Climb Higher Award.
The Climb Higher Award is presented monthly to a student who exemplifies resiliency,
outstanding work ethic, and kindness and positivity—qualities that Isaiah displays
both inside and outside the classroom.

of the 2025-2026 WVU Potomac State College students. The students were given alumni
information, event announcements, snacks, and bottled water. They also had the
opportunity to register for the chance to win gift cards and a laptop computer
that were awarded at Convocation on Monday, August 18. Isabell Marroquin was the
lucky recipient of a brand-new HP laptop computer.

A long-time keeper of the history of Keyser and the surrounding area who said he
earned his first college credit from Potomac State College when he was only in
second grade was honored with a special homecoming at that institution on Tuesday,
September 23.
Carl Dennison Avers, known to most as “Denny,” attended Potomac State College
from 1959-1961, going on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical
engineering at West Virginia University.
From its inception in 1983, the Scholars’ Wall, was originally conceived to recognize
the academic and scholarly activities of WVU Potomac State College faculty, alumni,
and students. During the early deliberations, the College planned to name the
wall in honor of Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who attended Potomac State and now
serves as chair of Harvard’s Department of African American Studies.
PSC Alumnus Marion ‘Butch’ Chambers III Leaves Planned Gift
Alumnus Marion ‘Butch’ Chambers III recently made a $60,000 planned gift in his will
to benefit WVU Potomac State College. The Butch Chambers President's Unrestricted
Endowment
will support the greatest needs of Potomac State College as determined by the president.
Chambers attended Potomac State College from 1962 to 1963. During his time at the
College, Chambers served on the advertising and typing staff for the Catamount
Yearbook, participated in tennis intramurals, and was a member of the campus Circle
K Club.
In addition to being inducted into the Sigma Phi Omega Honor Society, Chambers served
as a Platoon Leader, 2nd. Lt., in ROTC and as a member of the Roth Military Honorary
Society.
Future students at WVU Potomac State College will benefit from a $310,000 planned
gift that provides flexible funding to meet emerging needs. Alum Harry W. Porter
III and his wife, Rebecca Franklin-Porter, established a trust that left unrestricted
funds to PSC upon their passing. Their gift provides discretionary funding for
PSC President Jerry Wallace to address the College’s greatest needs.
“WVU Potomac State College has a rich history of donors who care about the college
and want to preserve the culture of community on campus,” PSC President Jerry Wallace
said. “This gift will help expand our programs and support for PSC employees and
students to get involved on campus and in our local communities.”
