A message from Alumni Board President Pam Wilkinson

I am honored to announce that due to a generous bequest from alumnus, John Philip Spoerl (Class of ‘63), an irrevocable trust has recently been established allowing the Alumni Association to create the John Philip Spoerl Scholarship, to be awarded to select Business Administration students at WVU Potomac State College.

If you are interested in giving back to the Alumni Association or College, there are three simple ways…

In my previous letter, I mentioned that the Alumni Association not only plays an integral role to support our College but also we are the home-base for all of our alumni to stay connected and I listed some ways we can all help to keep that feeling alive for all alumni.

Beyond helping our alumni to stay connected via Facebook and other social media, the Alumni Association participates in, financially supports, and promotes numerous activities in support of both the students and our Alumni in the following ways:

  • Commencement Ceremony
  • White Coat Ceremony for new Nursing students
  • WVU Day of Giving
  • Annual Homecoming Alumni Banquet and Awards
  • Valentine’s Day Dinner
  • Alumni dinners throughout the region

How can you help?

Here are three really easy ways to help us continue to give back.

Amazon Smile : This is a great way to support the Alumni Association at no cost to you. Simply go to https://smile.amazon.com/ch/55-0458420 to set up Potomac State College as your preferred charitable organization. Then shop on Amazon as you normally would via https://smile.amazon.com. Amazon will donate 0.5% of eligible purchases to the Alumni Association—no fees, no extra cost.

Facebook Birthday Fundraiser : Facebook allows a safe and easy way to set up a fundraiser for the Alumni Association for your birthday or any other special event you choose. Beyond allowing other alumni and your friends to donate, occasionally Facebook will also donate to your nonprofit fundraiser.

The directions to set up a birthday fundraiser through Facebook can be found at https://www.facebook.com/help/1910205189301966. Search for Potomac State College. Choose the Alumni Association and add the amount you hope to raise, currency and end date. Then click the “Create” button to publish your fundraiser. To set up a general fundraiser at any time, visit https://www.facebook.com/fundraisers/.

Include the Alumni Association in your Will or Trust : The Alumni Association currently operates off two Foundation endowment accounts that were set up as part of the donors’ generosity to provide a gift for the Alumni Association. These two accounts are endowed accounts, which means only the interest from these accounts are used. The principal of the gift will never be touched.

We want to give back to you. With alumni scattered across all 50 states and worldwide, wherever you are, at whatever stage of life you are in, we want to find out what alumni activities would be meaningful to you both personally and professionally. Essentially, we want to know what you want from your Alumni Association. To that end a short Alumni Questionnaire will be going out in the near future. This questionnaire is important to give us direction to build a meaningful and sustainable Alumni Association. You don’t have to wait for the questionnaire to let us know what is important to you.
