2024 Commencement Speaker

Clay B. Marsh, M.D., who serves as Chancellor and Executive Dean in Health Sciences at West Virginia University Morgantown, was the Commencement speaker at WVU Potomac State College on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Dr. Marsh leads the academic health sciences center of WVU which includes dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health, along with numerous allied health programs and clinical operations around the state.

He serves as West Virginia’s lead representative and spokesperson – nationally and internationally – in the areas of health, health education, and academic medicine.

In addition to focusing on finding statewide solutions for health and wellbeing, Dr. Marsh is a national leader in academic and personalized medicine, as well as in pulmonary and critical. He has concentrated his efforts in helping individuals stay healthy and in creating ecosystems to make this easier.

Dr. Marsh has been instrumental in recruitiang nearly 1,000 new physicians to WVU, has forged relationships to create new and innovative partnerships, and under his leadership, WVU has expanded services in five signature programs.

During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Marsh was named COVID-19 czar by Gov. Jim Justice in March 2020, and in December 2022, he was appointed as an adviser to Gov. Justice and the WV Department of Health and Human Resources.

Dr. Marsh, who began his career at WVU in 2015, holds more than 20 patents/patent disclosures, has mentored more than 50 M.D., M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, and junior faculty.

The Commencement ceremony began at 11 a.m. A total of 378 students have earned degrees from Potomac State College since last year’s graduation.
