Emily Pyles of Ft. Ashby (front) and Lauren Bacorn of Burlington, both pre-nursing students at West Virginia University Potomac State College, utilize technology purchased with a grant written by Associate Biology Professor Sheryl Chisholm, PhD, and Associate University Librarian Charles Julian, PhD.
Associate Biology Professor Sheryl Chisholm, PhD, along with Associate University Librarian Charles Julian, PhD, applied for and won a 2018 Teaching and Learning Commons Technology Integration Grant. The grant was used to purchase six new Apple iPads equipped with the Visible Body/Anatomy and Physiology software.
“The purchase from this grant will benefit students in several majors, including nursing and other health-related degree programs that require human anatomy and physiology and other biology courses,” stated Dr. Chisholm.
The iPads are being used in various laboratories to augment other traditional modalities. The iPads are giving the students a virtual hands-on experience to enhance learning of the concepts, principles and retention of facts required in these courses. In addition to using the iPads in the laboratory setting, students are also able to access them from the Mary F. Shipper Library for utilization outside of the classroom.
As a part of the requirements for the grant, assessment of the techniques and implementation of this technology are being conducted and will be presented at the 2019 Celebrate Conference to be held on the Morgantown campus.
Potomac State College is part of the WVU System located on the Keyser campus.
