Potomac State College to offer online prep courses for in-demand IT certifications

Beginning in fall 2019, West Virginia University Potomac State College will offer accelerated online prep courses in Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+, Network+, and Security+.  Each eight-week online course is designed with working adults in mind so the length of the courses can be adapted as needed.

All three prep courses are constructed to build a strong knowledge foundation and skills base, thereby providing individuals with the comprehension and confidence needed to pass the CompTIA certification exams.  Following is a brief description of each course:

CIS 106. PC Hardware Concepts covers the core competencies for the A+ exam, providing the hands-on experience and skills necessary to install, service, and support microcomputers. The A+ certification is an entry-level, industry standard certification that prepares students for technical support and IT operational roles.

CIS 236. Introduction to Cyber Security gives students an introduction to computer and network security procedures.  A pro-active approach is used to cover securing network services, devices and traffic, as well as responding to network breaches.

CIS 241. Networking Fundamentals, which is part of the Cisco Academy, includes topics such as OSI model, network topologies, IP addressing, networking components, and basic network designs.

In addition to being recognized globally, CompTIA certifications give individuals an edge when applying for jobs by validating their skills and expertise.  And since certifications are mandatory for certain positions, taking prep courses to improve test scores is an investment in the future.  An added benefit of taking the prep courses is that they count toward an AAS degree in computer information systems at WVU Potomac State College.

Courses will be taught by computer information systems faculty whose qualifications consist of various industry certifications including A+, Network+ and Security+.
