Ryan Gibson is West Virginia University Potomac State College’s new AmeriCorps VISTA Service Member. In this position his primary responsibility will be to connect students, faculty and staff with volunteer service opportunities throughout Keyser and Mineral County.

“If I can create a stronger sense of belonging amongst our students, particularly those who are not originally from this area, by giving them the opportunity to interact more with the community, I hope to increase their desire to succeed and to continue to do good work throughout the rest of their lives, wherever they may go,” Gibson said.

Gibson plans to continue building upon the initiatives the previous VISTA Service Member created, such as the Catamount Care Closet, that collects food, toiletries and clothing for students. He also plans to seek and create additional services for students.

Gibson is from Hurt, Va. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a concentration in vocal performance from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in higher education administration from WVU. He’s currently pursuing his Ph.D. in higher education from WVU.

Prior to his current position with AmeriCorps Vista, he served as a temporary academic advisor and success coach at Potomac State College.

Anyone with volunteer service opportunities can contact Gibson at 304-788-6842 or email ryan.gibson1@gmail.com.
