Madison Taylor, a business management major from Short Gap, W.Va., was presented with the Catamounts Climb Higher award at West Virginia University Potomac State College.

Taylor has been working since her sophomore year in high school and was recently promoted to part-time manager at American Eagle Outfitters, during which time she also maintained an 18 credit-hour schedule at the College. She will be completing an internship at The Belt Corporation in Cumberland, Md., this summer as an administrative assistant.

She enjoys volunteering in the activities department at Keyser Healthcare Center and recently taught a Computers for Beginners class to many of the residents.

“I chose to go to PSC because of its welcoming, homey atmosphere, plus, I love seeing familiar faces from my community. The smaller classes and the opportunity to stay at home while earning a four-year bachelor’s degree helped me make my decision,” Taylor said.

Climb Higher recipients are recognized for their ability to bounce back despite encountering obstacles, for overcoming challenges, and for staying the course. Recipients are also recognized for their outstanding work ethic, kindness, and positive attitude. Although this award is not based on GPA, recipients must be in good academic standing.

Taylor credits the entire business department as being instrumental in her success at PSC. “I would particularly like to credit the late Dr. Leo Johnson for believing in me more than I believed in myself. His hard work and dedication toward students will remain with me throughout my life,” she said. Adding, “Professor Amy Weaver has been a direct mentor and friend during my time at PSC as well. She has presented me with many wonderful opportunities and has pushed me to be the most successful version of myself.”

Taylor graduated this spring with an AAS in business technology. She will continue her education at Potomac State College, working toward a bachelor’s degree in business management. Her future plans include opening a small business in the Keyser area.
