Tyler Blizzard, a double major in physics and aerospace engineering from Ridgeley, W.Va., was recognized this past spring with the Keyser Rotary Club’s ‘Service Above Self’ award at West Virginia University Potomac State College.

According to Rotary guidelines, the recipient of the ‘Service Above Self’ award must demonstrate exemplary humanitarian service with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others.

Blizzard surpassed expected efforts by volunteering to pack lunches for schools once a month; assisted with the set-up of a Christmas breakfast in Burlington and helped with craft activities at a local nursing home.

Additionally, he has helped build and work at the House of the Setting Sun, a haunted house in Greenspring, W.Va., which opens each year by the nonprofit, Community Involvement for Kids, Inc. He also assisted with making apple butter at the annual Burlington Apple Harvest Festive; helped coordinate a community movie night at a local church; assisted with New Student Orientation events; and served on student panels at the College.

Furthermore, Blizzard attended the 10-week Research Experience for Undergraduates in Multimessenger Astrophysics at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.

He has been named to the Dean’s List, and traveled to Merida, Mexico with the College’s International Club earlier this spring. “The trip was wonderful! I’ll never forget the experience,” Blizzard said.
