Nixin Ponturo, an elementary education major from Centreville, Va., is the recipient of the April Catamounts Climb Higher Award at West Virginia University Potomac State College.
Ponturo serves as an assistant to PSC Title III Career Specialist Melissa Dayton and enjoys playing on the Valorant and Marvel Rivals esports teams.
Even though Ponturo was recently diagnosed with a hypermobility disorder and struggles with joint pain and chronic nausea, she has not let that deter her from attending class and completing her assignments.
“Despite her health conditions, Nixin has a charming personality, always has a smile and is excited to learn. She naturally takes on a leadership role in groups and will help anyone she can,” Biology Instructor Farren Smith said.
Climb Higher recipients are recognized for their ability to bounce back despite encountering obstacles, for overcoming challenges, and for staying the course. Recipients are also recognized for their outstanding work ethic, kindness, and positive attitude. Although this award is not based on GPA, recipients must be in good academic standing.
“I could not have succeeded without help from the amazing friends I met here and the incredible support I’ve received from Ms. Dayton, Instructor Smith and Professor Andrea Schafer! I encourage all students to talk to their professors, attend office hours and ask for help when you need it. Professors at Potomac State do their best to help you succeed – not only in their class – but throughout your time in college,” Ponturo said.
According to Ponturo, she has already been accepted into Frostburg State University. After earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, she plans to teach kindergarten.
