West Virginia University Potomac State College recently held the Student Scholarship Recipient & Donor Luncheon on the Keyser campus. Donors and student recipients were given the opportunity to tell their stories to one another, including how scholarships helped them stay focused and succeed during their time at PSC.
The significance of donor scholarships for college students should never be understated. They can reduce or eliminate the financial burden of a college education, serve as a lifeline for low-income students, and allow students to better focus on their academic studies.
“I am super appreciative of the donors who graciously give to PSC scholarships. They have greatly impacted my life and college experience. Because of their generous contributions, I can proudly say that I received my BAS in business administration debt free, allowing me to start my career without the burden of student loans,” recent graduate Averi Smith said.
West Virginia University Potomac State College re-established the Student Scholarship Recipient & Donor Luncheon at the College, which was held in April. PSC President, Dr. Jerry Wallace, welcomed the fall 2024 scholarship recipients and donors to the luncheon, celebrating the kindness of donors and the achievements of students.
Alumni Association President, Sabrina Cave, stated, “I am honored to be here to witness the impact that scholarships have on our students' lives. Our alumni community takes great pride in supporting the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers. To our donors, thank you for your generosity. Your contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of these students.”
Other speakers included Dr. Vicki Huffman (associate dean), Dr. Ronna Mathias Monseau (alumna and owner of Health Matters Urgent Care), and Meghan Anderson (2014 graduate and scholarship recipient), as well as current students and faculty members.
The common thread throughout the program was the financial impact that scholarships have had and continue to have in the lives of students. Scholarships are an investment in the future, often opening doors to networking opportunities and internships that can lead to job opportunities.
According to Christopher Liebig, who created the Liebig Family Scholarship, PSC has served as a launching pad for so many of our family members. It is an honor, personally, to continue that tradition. Being able to give back to WVU, PSC, and the Keyser community has been a blessing, and we hope to jump-start a similar tradition for another student and family. Go Catamounts!”
Scholarships, donor gifts, emergency funds, and other types of support at WVU Potomac State College can serve as a catalyst, empowering students to increase their academic performance. Financial support can also increase retention and graduation rates.
“It is amazing how life comes full circle. You never know where your path will lead. I started college at PSC with an Alumni Association Scholarship. Now, I’m an assistant professor and a member of the Alumni Board. PSC was just the start of an amazing adventure!” Molly Alvaro said.
Dr. Megan Webb (Development & Alumni Relations Director) offered closing remarks by extending a heart-felt thank you to all supporters and donors who create a brighter future for our students with their generous gifts and donations.
Gifts are made through the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University and its affiliates.
