Debra Wood, a mental health and addictions studies, and pre-social work major was chosen as the May Catamounts Climb Higher Award recipient at West Virginia University Potomac State College. PSC Campus President Dr. Jerry Wallace presented the award.

Catamounts Climb Higher award recipients are recognized for their ability to bounce back despite encountering obstacles, for overcoming challenges, and for staying the course – and May’s recipient, Debra Wood, has faced and overcome many challenges.

“As a first-generation college student at the age of 61, my journey has been filled with numerous challenges and triumphs. My majors in mental health and addictions studies, and pre-social work have provided me with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. My volunteer work has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional growth. I have had the privilege of volunteering at Loving Hands Outreach Ministry, HopeFest, and collaborating with other organizations in the community to raise awareness about mental health and addiction,” Wood said.

After quitting school in 1979 due to homelessness, followed by seven years of domestic violence, Wood became incarcerated. While there, she took the initiative to earn her GED. Though she tried to continue her higher education several times, addiction and domestic violence hindered her progress. In 2014, Wood won her battle with addiction.

“I fully believe that my faith has been a guiding force in my journey. As Philippians 4:13 states, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ This verse has been a source of strength and motivation throughout my academic endeavors and personal life,” Wood stated.

Adding, “My personal experiences have also shaped my commitment to helping others. As a survivor of childhood neglect, 28 years of crack addiction, domestic and gun violence, and now 11 years being clean and sober, I have dedicated my life to supporting women in AA and Celebrate Recovery. I am an active speaker at 3'D Recovery and sponsor women who are on their journey to recovery. Additionally, I am a licensed minister from Tora School Ministry, having graduated with my master's in January, and I am currently working on my doctorate at Trees of Righteousness School of Ministry.”

Wood encourages students to stay focused on their hopes and dreams and not on distractions. She also mentions seeking out faculty and staff at Potomac State, whose support has been instrumental in her success at the College.

Wood plans to obtain her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work through the WVU online program and eventually wants to open a recovery center to help people recover from addiction and domestic violence, enabling them to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Catamounts Climb Higher award recipients are also recognized for their outstanding work ethic, kindness, and positive attitude. Although this award is not based on GPA, recipients must be in good academic standing.

In addition to being named to the Spring 2025 President’s List, Wood was also the recipient of the Outstanding Pre-Social Work Award.
