Hello!
The Alumni Association has taken over President Wallace’s Op-Ed for August and
we have a lot to share.
It’s been a busy summer for the Potomac State College Alumni Association Board of Directors.
JULY
In July our board of directors met and received an enrollment update from President Wallace. We discussed ways that the Alumni Association can continue to support Potomac State College (PSC) by helping recruit and retain students. Alumni reached out to 85 students that were enrolled at PSC in the spring semester but had not registered for fall 2025 classes. Out of those 85, 24% of the students enrolled.
In addition, postcards were mailed to all returning students to encourage them to continue their educational path and to remember that they will always be part of the Catamount family by being an alum. These postcards reminded them that the Alumni family is cheering them on to success.
Tuesday, August 5
On August 5, I visited WVU Potomac State College and met with President Wallace. We discussed ways for the Alumni Association to continue to support the college. I’m excited to share that we will be working with Enrollment Management to increase our outreach efforts through high school visits, college fairs and end of the year awards day ceremonies. These efforts help the current team at PSC extend their outreach.
While on campus, I had the opportunity to tour campus with Micah Pears, director of Facilities, and see upgrades to classrooms, athletic fields and the new location for University Police. I also was interviewed for the new video to debut during Homecoming Weekend called Catamount Chapters. Special thanks to Megan Webb, director of Development, for spearheading this project.
Tuesday, August 12
The WVU Potomac State College Alumni Mentorship Program is an initiative developed by the PSC Alumni Association Board of Directors to foster student success and strengthen alumni engagement. On August 12 some of our Alumni Board members hosted a panel discussion with students in the Summer Bridge Program. They discussed the role and value of having Alumni Mentors. This summer West Virginia University Potomac State College (PSC) Alumnus Carl Dennison “Denny” Avers name was inscribed on the Duke Anthony Whitmore/Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Scholars Wall. He has a long and inspiring history with Potomac State College. The Keyser, W.Va. native attended Potomac State from 1959 to 1961 before earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering at the WVU Morgantown campus. The public is invited to join us in celebrating Denny Avers on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 2:40 p.m. in the Mary F. Shipper Library. Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP by September 8, https://give.wvu.edu/CelebrateDennyAvers .
Sunday, August 17
You all remember how exciting move-in day was on campus and our Alumni were at the Mary F. Shipper Library to welcome students and families on Sunday, August 17. They passed out water and snacks to students and welcomed them to the WVU Potomac State College family. Special thanks to our move-in welcome crew!
Monday, August 18
On Monday, August 18, the Alumni Association participated in Convocation. At move-in students were able to enter raffles for a chance to win items that the Alumni Association purchased such as gift cards and the top prize was a laptop. Alumni solicited local businesses for prizes and we are so thankful for the support of the Keyser community. Thanks to our Alumni board members for their support!
