Bailey Ferguson challenges Tyler Metcalf to a wind power race, while Arlene Lantz observes. Lantz has been a presenter representing G-FORCE 4-H and Garret Engineering and Robotics Society (GEARS) each year. Participants used their STEM knowledge to select the set of windmill blades based pm angle and blade lengths to win the power race!

The Mineral County STEM Network will host the 5th Annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Festival for area students and parents. The event will be held on Saturday, March 25, from 12 to 4 p.m., on the campus of Potomac State College of West Virginia University.

This area STEM Festival is modeled after the USA Science and Engineering Festival and Expo held in Washington, D.C.  It is an exciting venue to experience the numerous hands-on activities! Interested groups are invited to submit proposals.

Garrett Engineering and Robotics Society (GEARS) and G-Force 4-H have presented excellent hands on activities related to engineering challenges and robotics. Phil Malone provides leadership for GEARS and Arlene Lantz, a professional teacher, is one of the lead volunteers with the program.  “We have had a great experience at the STEM Festival, it is a day well spent for both presenters, students and families,” says Lantz.

The mission of the festival is to re-invigorate the interest of our youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities and careers by producing and presenting compelling, exciting, educational and entertaining science gatherings.

Business, industry and organizations are encouraged to participate by providing a hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) activity that will stimulate interest and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Presentations are needed that appeal to all levels: elementary, middle and high school students.

Proposals are easy to submit on line and are due February 1 at: http://mineralstem.com/SpeakerApp.php. Last year all spaces were full, so be sure to submit your proposal by the deadline.

The planning committee chairperson is Andrea Schafer, Potomac State College of WVU, Craig Kesner, Orbital ATK and Scott Staley, Mineral County Schools. If you have questions about the proposals contact Andrea Schafer agschafer@mail.wvu.edu at 304-788-7133.

The Mineral County STEM Network’s purpose is to increase communication among individuals, business/industry and organizations interested in encouraging our youths to consider the different STEM fields for careers.
