Charles Ryan, Class of 1960, named 2022 outstanding alumnus

Charles “Charlie” Ryan, Class of 1960, is this year’s alumni honoree to be named to the Duke Anthony Whitmore/Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Academic Achievement Wall, which recognizes the scholarly activities of the College’s students, faculty and alumni. Ryan will be recognized, along with the other named Whitmore/Gates scholars, during the 82nd Annual Recognition Day Program to be held Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m., in the Church-McKee Arts Center.


Charles “Charlie” Ryan is the author of ‘Alacrity; Public Relations, Politics & Journalism in West Virginia’ as well as five other books.  In the 1960’s, Charles was a reporter for station KTVI-TV in St. Louis., Mo. He was also a broadcast news editor for the Associated Press and news editor for WSAZ-TV in Huntington, W.Va., where he was responsible for coverage of the Charleston metropolitan area. He was also a news director of WCHS-TV in Charleston, where he anchored a nightly newscast and created extensive public affairs programming.  

Charles also served as the founding Dean of the University of Charleston Graduate School of Business. Charles is the former owner of Charles Ryan Associates, an advertising agency in Charleston and has more than 35 years of experience in public relations and media training, domestically and internationally.  

Charlie lives in South Carolina with his wife Becky, and puppy Gibney.

Charlie will be honored in-person at the 2022 Homecoming Dinner.
