Eddie Thorne, a maintenance worker in Housing and Resident Life, was recently named the 2019 Outstanding Classified Staff Person of the Year at WVU Potomac State College. Making the presentation was Campus President Jennifer Orlikoff, PhD.
WVU Potomac State College/Community Jazz Ensemble to perform
The West Virginia University Potomac State College/Community Jazz Ensemble will present its Spring Jazz Concert on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Church-McKee Arts Center. The band, which is under the direction of Fred Kesner, rehearses weekly at the college and is comprised of the area’s finest jazz musicians.
Special guest artist for this concert is Beau Hartman of Cumberland. A very talented and versatile vocalist, Hartman will perform a special arrangement of Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life and will also swing with the band on a Gordon Goodwin arrangement of Too Close for Comfort.
WVU Potomac State College to celebrate 32nd Athletic Hall of Fame
The West Virginia University Potomac State College Athletic Hall of Fame committee will hold its 32nd annual awards dinner on Thursday, April 25, at which time they will induct Conrad Carney (Class of 1983) and Jacke Healey (Class of 2008), into the PSC Athletic Hall of Fame. Current sophomore athletes will also be recognized at this time.
Carney played football for the Catamounts before heading to the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship. After graduating with a degree in business administration, and at the age of 23, Carney became one of the youngest managers in the history of McCaw Communications (formerly Cellular One).

Name reveal ceremony held for child manikin at Potomac State College
Sharing in the name reveal ceremony were: BSN Program Chair April Shapiro; BSN Instructor Linda Shroyer; Chemistry Lecturer Theresa Falkowski; Philanthropist Patricia Harman (Falkowski’s mother); and Program Assistant Rachel Raschella.
A name reveal ceremony was recently held for the new child manikin in the nursing wing skills lab at West Virginia University School of Nursing: Potomac State College. The name Jesse Lynn Falkowski was chosen by lecturer Theresa Falkowski, and was purchased by Falkowski and her mother, Patricia Harman, in memory of Falkowski’s late husband, Henry, who served as a professor in the Chemistry Department at the College for 41 years.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt to be held at Potomac State
The Ag and Forestry Club at West Virginia University Potomac State College will hold their annual Easter Egg Hunt for children in the community on Tuesday, April 16 at the College’s Indoor Riding Arena, located at the top of Chestnut Street. Registration for this event is free and begins at 6 p.m.
Participants will be divided into two groups: age six and under, and age seven to 12. Pony rides will also be available for the small fee of $5. So bring your baskets, boots (it can get a bit messy), cameras, and kids for an evening of fun on the WVU Potomac State College campus.
Pyles to give talk about heroin and opioid epidemic
Major James R. Pyles, (retired), who served with the Maryland State Police, will give a presentation about the heroin and opioid epidemic on Wednesday, April 17 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Heritage Room in University Place at West Virginia University Potomac State College. This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Spring Concert to be presented at Potomac State
Charles D. Whitehill, Ph.D., retired professor of music at Potomac State College, left, and his son, C. Rhoades Whitehill, retired from the United States Navy Band in Washington, D. C., collaborated in writing and arranging a three-movement suite for concert band entitled Classic Suite For Band. The work will be performed by the Potomac State College-Community Band on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 pm in the Church-McKee Arts Center, with Dr. Whitehill serving as guest conductor for this piece. Dr. Whitehill is founder of the band which is currently under the direction of Jay Moon. The public is invited to this free concert.
Local Musician Don Stephens to Close Out Highland Arts Unlimited’s Season, April 28
Local artist Don Stephens will wrap up the Highland Arts Unlimited season as he brings his talents to the Keyser Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28.
