Faculty Executive Committee Minutes, January 11, 2019

The Faculty Executive Committee meeting of January 11, 2019, was called to order by Chair Chisholm at 3:05pm in the Science Hall Conference Room.

Dr. Badenhoop moved to approval the minutes. Secretary Vogtman amended the minutes to reflect that Sydow, T. was present. Dr. Ballard moved to approve the amended minutes. Motion Carried.

 

President Orlikoff reported the following:

·       Retention from Fall to Spring semesters has increased over 10% for first time freshmen (FTF) and 5% overall from last year. WVU-Potomac State College rated higher than other institutions in West Virginia in percentage improvement overall.

·       President Gee congratulated WVU-PSC for being a welcoming campus and an academically successful campus.

·       At least 31 people came to the employee luncheon that was held Friday, January 11. Tentative planning has Tuesday, February 5 as the next luncheon time.

·       WVU-PSC has been granted the HSTA grant for the forensic science camp this summer on campus.

·       Mineral County Day of Legislature went well. President Orlikoff met with Kent Leonhardt and agricultural department were present (Dr. Ballard, Robert Cheves, Corey Armstrong, Stephen Starcher). The agreement was made to allow the agricultural team from WVU-PSC to be a part of Strategic Planning for Agriculture for the state of WV.

·       WVU-Morgantown began Strategic Transformation Plan, PSC Division Chairs will be included in the process.

·       At 8:00am on January 30, WVU-PSC will be holding a “town-hall” type of meeting. It will open with a State of the College speech and open session will follow.

·       In December, WVU-News emailed out an article on the Code of Conduct and how individuals can live by the 5 core values; service, curiosity, respect, accountability, and appreciation.

·       The prestigious Judith A. Herndon Legislative Fellowship was awarded to WVU-PSC student Olivia Canoy.

 

 

Dean Ochoa reported the following:

·       WVU-PSC will see Charles Julian retire in June of 2019. Linda Bane retired at the beginning of January 2019.

·       There will be a meeting Monday, January 14 on how to rejuvenate NSOs.

·       Friday, January 11 was the last day for add/drop classes.

·       Probation-Suspension Update: (Fall 2018)

§ 235 students scored less than 2.0 GPA

§ 192 of these students were FTF.

§ If students scored above a 1.0 GPA they were scheduled with academic success coaches via Jaynie Gilbert.

§ If students scored below a 1.0 GPA they were put into EDP courses as well as scheduled with academic success coaches via Jaynie Gilbert.

§ 18 students were suspended due to non-compliance with their academic contracts from Spring of 2018.

Chair Chisholm reported the following:

·       New trainings will be coming this semester.

·       Andrea Schafer will be the Featured Faculty at the Faculty Assembly meeting on January 25. She will be sharing some of her best practices to implement in classrooms of the under-prepared.

·       The Teaching & Learning Fellowship led by Dr. Meadows will be doing a book-club luncheon. These books will focus on teaching and learning strategies. The first book discussed will be Teaching Underprepared Students by Kathleen Gabriel. 

·       There will be training for Banner. This will help with advising and should eliminate the need to assign pin numbers, as advisors will be able to meet with students and then unlock their accounts.

·       An ad-hoc committee to work on an advising survey has been created.  The survey will be a collection of questions that address each of the advising outcomes.  Faculty can choose from the list to create their own survey to assess their advising methods.  This assessment can be incorporated into their DM file and be used college wide as well.

 

Division Reports:

·       Applied Sciences:

§ The division is getting ready to begin faculty searches.

·       Liberal Arts:

§ There is desire to improve communication between the academic success center and professors. Chair Sydow will begin informal discussions within the division to see what can be resolved.  He will report back to Chair Chisholm, who will take further action as needed. 

·       STEM:

§ No report.

 

Faculty Representative Reports:

·       WVU Faculty Senate meeting:

§ No report.

 

·       WVU Senate Executive Committee:

§  Professor Goff reported the following from December 17, 2018 meeting:

§  WVU retained R1 status.

§  The Blue Ribbon is completing their plan which includes a request that $10 million be given to regional institutions.

§ The Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) has moved to the Provost’s Office. Daniel Long was hired as the new Director of OAS.

§ Campus Carry was discussed.

§ WVU and the Board of Governors are discussing the changes in the policy involving relationships between Faculty, Staff, and Students. The policy change will reflect that there is to be no relationship between faculty and staff with undergraduates, but will not change the current policy regarding relationships between faculty/staff and graduate students.

·       ACF Report:

§ Campus Carry Bill and Legalizing Cannabis Bill in WV were discussed.

§ Higher Education Day with Legislative is January 28, 2019.

§ Average faculty salaries across the state of WV have been posted.

§ Great Teacher’s Seminar will be June 17, 2019.

§ Blue Ribbon Commission Policy meeting is not fully prepared to make a recommendation.  

§ HEPC discussion regarding the amount of oversight HEPC has regarding the institutes of higher education in the state. 

 

Ad Hoc Classroom Committee:

·       Revised Classroom Evaluation form will be presented at Faculty Assembly for vote.  (Annex 2)

 

Faculty Welfare:

·       Revised Governance Charter will be present at Faculty Assembly for vote. (Annex 3). Notable changes include changes to the CWRC membership and the makeup of the Student Success Council.  Annex 4 is a brief list of changes.  Chair Chisholm requested that FEC members have conversations about the documents with fellow faculty members so that a vote can proceed in February. 

·       Revised Constitution will be presented at Faculty Assembly for vote. (Annex 5).  Annex 6 is a brief list of changes.  Chair Chisholm requested that FEC members have conversations about the documents with fellow faculty members so that a vote can proceed in February. 

 

Proposed Faculty Assembly Agenda:

·       Secretary Vogtman amended the proposed agenda to include ACF report. Professor Goff moved to approve the proposed agenda as amended. Motion Carried.
