First WVU BSN cohort on Keyser campus receiving proficient instruction from skilled faculty, staff

(L-R) April Shaprio, Linda Shroyer and Lisa Gilbert, who have a combined 84 years of experience in the field of nursing, will be instructing students in the recently accredited WVU School of Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program being offered at WVU Potomac State College this fall.  Rachel Raschella will offer both administrative and lab support.

The first cohort of students in West Virginia University’s School of Nursing on the Potomac State College campus can be assured that they’re learning from qualified professionals who have a combined 84 years of experience between them. 

Faculty and staff involved with the WVU School of Nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program have been busy preparing for students all summer.

Overseeing the BSN program is April Shapiro, PhD, RN, who is responsible for the administrative day-to-day operations of the program, curriculum, committee assignments, teaching assignments, budgeting, and programming, as well as faculty reviews and evaluations. 

Dr. Shapiro, who serves on the WVU School of Nursing Administrative Council, Admissions, Curriculum, and Outcomes Assessment Committees, will also advise BSN students as well as teach the pharmacology and evidence-based practice/research courses.    

Dr. Shapiro previously served as the coordinator and department head at the Mineral County Technical Center, School of Practical Nursing in Keyser.  She earned her PhD in nursing from the WVU School of Nursing; her master’s degree in nursing education from the University of Maryland at Baltimore; a second master’s degree in adult and technical education from Marshall University; and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Linda Shroyer, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, will serve as a full-time instructor while also functioning as course coordinator for both Nursing 211 (Health Assessment and Communication) and 212 (Foundations of Nursing Practice).  In addition to teaching, Shroyer will evaluate students’ performance in the areas of classroom, skills lab and clinical.  She serves on the WVU School of Nursing Curriculum Committee as well. 

Most recently, she has served as the chief executive officer at WVU Potomac Valley Hospital.  Shroyer earned a certified family nurse practitioner degree from Penn State University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in nursing at WVU.  She earned both her master’s degree in nursing administration/education, and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland.

Lisa Gilbert, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, will serve as a part-time adjunct instructor teaching skills lab and clinical for Nursing 211 (Health Assessment and Communication) and 212 (Foundations of Nursing Practice), as well as evaluating students’ performance in the areas of skills lab and clinical. 

Gilbert earned her master’s degree in nursing and family nurse practitioner from WVU, as well as her bachelor’s degree in nursing.  Previous work experience includes serving as a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse and as a clinical assistant at various hospitals and medical centers.

Rachel Raschella serves as a program assistant III in the BSN program providing administrative support to the chairperson and faculty, including support in maintaining the program’s fiscal and physical resources.  Raschella also advises BSN students, assists in the skills lab, and serves on the WVU School of Nursing Admissions Committee.

Raschella earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Frostburg State University and her associate degree in business management technology from WVU Potomac State College.  She has been employed with the WVU School of Nursing, Keyser campus, since March of this year.

Potomac State College is part of the WVU System located on the Keyser campus.
