According to Yelena Meadows, Ph.D., assistant math professor at Potomac State College, who organized the event, the competition involved problem solving based on a general high school math curriculum; however, students were prohibited from using calculators.

Professor Candace Lawrence, M.S., gave the feature presentation about Danica McKellar, the actress who starred in the television series, “The Wonder Years,” who also graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in math. She has written five non-fiction books, all dealing with mathematics: Math Doesn't SuckKiss My MathHot X: Algebra ExposedGirls Get Curves: Geometry Takes Shape, which encourages middle-school and high-school-aged girls to have confidence and succeed in mathematics. She also wrote Goodnight, numbers.

Other faculty helping with the event included Associate Professor Richard Petersen, Ph.D. and Professor Nikki Chandler, M.S.

Dr. Meadows says the faculty plans to sponsor the competition again next year and hopes even more students and schools will participate.
