Potomac State College of WVU’s recently renovated recreation center provides students with a gymnasium for pick-up games and intramural sports. The facility will also provide students with weight and cardiovascular equipment rooms; workout studio for yoga, Pilates and aerobic exercise; and a walking track around the gymnasium. The recreation center is housed in what is now called the J. Edward Kelley Center, the former National Guard Armory, in Keyser, W.Va.

As Potomac State College of West Virginia University continues to enhance its collegiate experience, it recently opened the doors to its newly renovated student recreation center. This new amenity is housed in what was formerly the National Guard Armory, but will be referred to going forward as the J. Edward Kelley Center, in honor of the local World War II hero.

The College began renovating the facility this past fall and is making various aspects of the recreation center available to students, faculty and staff as they come online. The gymnasium, where students can play basketball, volleyball, soccer, or walk/run laps on the track around the court area, opened the first week students returned to campus for the spring semester. Intramural activities including basketball, dodgeball, soccer, and volleyball are already scheduled and in play.

This past week, the weight and cardiovascular equipment rooms were opened to students, faculty and staff.

The next aspect of the recreation center to soon be completed and available will be the workout studio where yoga, Pilates, and aerobic exercise sessions will be held.

According to Dean of Student Life William Letrent, recreation center hours will be extended as the College hires more staff to cover the facility. He says the College also hopes in the future to open the walking track to the community for use during designated morning hours.

“This facility also frees up space in the Lough Gymnasium, previously used by both the athletic and intramural teams, now giving the athletic teams their own weight room and practice space,” said Dean Letrent.

“The rec center is a win for both our intercollegiate athletes and our general student population.  I see it as contributing to the overall health, happiness, and welfare of the entire student body and campus community,” concluded Campus President Jennifer Orlikoff.
