Alumnus Denny Avers (left) was recognized by the Mary F. Shipper Library during Homecoming 2018 at West Virginia University Potomac State College, for his contribution and commitment to the digitization and distribution of local history resources.  Presenting him with a certificate is Charles Julian who serves as the associate university librarian at the College.

Carl Dennison “Denny” Avers was recently recognized by West Virginia University (WVU) Potomac State College at the annual brunch during Homecoming 2018 for his commitment to the digitization and distribution of local history resources.

In cooperation with the Mary F. Shipper Library team, Avers provided a financial gift that matched PSC’s commitment to preserving and disseminating local history records and information.  The result was digitization and distribution of all archived issues of the Mineral Daily News-Tribune newspaper.  The collection is available to the public at:  http://psclibrary.advantage-preservation.com.

After graduating from Keyser High School in 1960, Avers attended Potomac State College in 1961, and then earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at WVU.  He retired in 1995 after a 30-year career with IBM Federal Systems.

Avers has been honored with several awards, including the Keyser High School Legion of Honor in 1989; the Distinguished West Virginian Award in 1996; and the Potomac State College Alumni Achievement Award in 1998.

Although Avers currently lives at Lake Monticello near Charlottesville, Virginia, his ties to Keyser remain strong and include membership in Trinity Lutheran Church, of which his grandparents were founding members.

Potomac State College is part of the WVU System located on the Keyser campus.
