Students and employees on the campus of West Virginia University Potomac State College began the semester by donating their time and food as both groups partnered with two different organizations to combat hunger at the local and international levels.
Potomac State students partnered with the international hunger relief organization, Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now).
First-year freshmen pulled together as they formed assembly linesto measure, fill, seal, and pack more than 30,000 meals that will be sent to developing countries around the world. This community service project titled, ‘Catamounts Serve’ aligns with the One WVU core values by teaching students to add value to the lives of others while also living out our core value of service.
First-year freshmen at the West Virginia University Potomac State College campus formed assembly lines as they packed more than 30,000 meals to help end hunger in developing countries. By partnering with Rise Against Hunger, students were able to make a difference in the lives of others.
Rise Against Hunger was founded by Ray Buchanan in 1998, a Methodist minister and Vietnam War veteran who envisioned a world without hunger. In 2017, Rise Against Hunger’s commitment to end world hunger by 2030 impacted more than 1.4 million lives in 74 countries.
Potomac State College employees partnered with a local organization, Food for Thought, by donating crackers, peanut butter, granola bars, macaroni and cheese, Ramen noodles, applesauce, oatmeal, etc. Food for Thought is a local charity that provides weekend and holiday food to children in seven Mineral County schools.
They are funded through churches, civic organizations and individual contributions. Groups, businesses or individuals wanting to donate may do so by contacting Dinah Courrier, Food for Thought coordinator, at 304-788-9099.
